In 2002, Lama Zopa Rinpoche requested Amy Cayton to put together a collection of stories from FPMT students about successfully dealing with lung (pronounced "loong"). Rinpoche was quite clear that the collection should be about “what worked,” and not about the stories of what was experienced while having the rlung.
There are different types of rlung (heart, blood, tantric, etc.); rlung can come from imbalance in air, phlegm, or bile. It is best if imbalances can be re-balanced, not simply pacified, and best to consult a qualified teacher or Tibetan doctor. Not every appearing rlung-ish state is rlung (things labeled as rlung in Dharma communities may not really be best handled as rlung), and not all forms of rlung are treated in the same way. For example, if eating fatty foods is good for an rlung coming from an air imbalance, they may not be helpful at all for someone whose imbalance is in the bile element.
This book contains the experiences of several Western meditators who have dealt with rlung. We hope anyone experiencing rlung may benefit from the experiences and successes that are shared in this book!
