The great yogi Milarepa (1040-1123) is one of the most revered figures in Tibetan history and among all sects of Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa’s guru was the famous translator, Marpa (1012-1097), himself the main disciple of Naropa (1016-1100).

During a Milarepa initiation Lama Zopa Rinpoche offered a profound commentary on Milarepa’s Hymn, an inspiring prayer where Rinpoche concludes that the way to really enjoy happiness in this life is by giving up desire — seeking the pleasures of this life, food, clothing, and reputation.

Listen to this hymn and  watch below the teaching that Rinpoche offered prior to the Milarepa initiation in Shivapuri Village, Nepal, April 6,2022 (transcript of teaching)

3 pages, 2022 edition.
