To do this Sur Ritual practice, it best to have received the great initiation of Chenrezig. However, it is also possible to do the practice by just visualizing Chenrezig above the crown of one's head. It is not necessary to have received the oral transmission of the Sur practice before embarking on it.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche advises FPMT centers and study groups to do the practice of Sur regularly. Rinpoche said centers could set up a roster system, having individuals or small groups taking responsibility to do the practice of Sur for a period of time. The best time to do it is in the evening.

Rinpoche strongly emphasizes the importance of this practice in helping centers clear obstacles and create merit by making charity to the sentient beings of the six realms. Rinpoche said that this practice is very beneficial in general for sentient beings and in particular for pretas.

Lama Zopa’s advice is that the spirits could get used to one offering Sur every day and be upset when that is disrupted. If one offers Sur only every now and then, the spirits don’t get used to receiving it every day and aren’t upset when it is not offered.

Compiled by Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
