Dharanis contain the essence of a teaching but are often compared to mantras due to their intended ritual vocalization. Generally, however, dharanis are longer than mantras and are more likely to have intelligible phrases, like Sutras. The word “dharani” is from a Sanskrit root word that means "to hold or maintain." Dharanis are said to have the power to heal and protect from harm.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche advised reciting this mantra, when the Ebola crisis first arose. Lhamo Loma Gyonma or Parnashavari, in Skanskrit, is a deity invoke for eliminating contagious disease.

From Geshe Gelek Chodha, resident teacher at FPMT Kadampa Center:
“A long time ago, before 1959 in Tibet, within Sera Je monastery there were many many small colleges established, based on the region in Tibet. So, (one of the colleges) in Tibet, had pandemic issues, problems. A lot of monks passed away. The monks from the college recited this mantra, and the pandemic eventually died down, disappeared.”

This mantra was suggested by Geshe Gelek’s teacher, Serjey Khensur Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Delek, to recite during the COVID-19 pandemic.
