This homage to the incomparable Lama Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug tradition, was composed by one of his two main disciples, Khedrubje, who reportedly encountered Je Tsongkhapa several times after the revered master had manifested passing away. 

Khedrubje was an eminent scholar who wrote many major commentaries on both sutra and tantra.  He was recognised posthumously as the First Panchen Lama. 

Lama Zopa Rinpoche recommends that students recite this prayer as part of the celebration of the anniversary of Lama Tsongkhapa’s parinirvana. The anniversary, called Ganden Ngamchoe, literally “Ganden Offering of the Twenty-Fifth Day,” is commonly referred to as "Lama Tsongkhapa Day" and occurs on the 25th day of the 10th month of the Tibetan calendar.
