This collection of images depicts the Sixteen Arhats, a work of art made by Sonam Sherpa at Nalanda Monastery. Lama Zopa Rinpoche requested to photograph them to make them available to others.

The Sixteen Arhats (Foe Destroyers) are also known as the Sixteen Sthaviras (Elders)— who have destroyed their inner enemy, the delusions, and attained liberation from cyclic existence—where selected by Buddha Shakyamuni to protect the Dharma. At the time of the parinirvana they vowed to remain in the world to preserve the Dharma until the time of the future Buddha Maitreya.

Benefits of making offerings and prayers to the Sixteen Arhats:

  • All the victorious ones (buddhas) are pleased.
  • Anyone who correctly practices it will have no obstacles.
  • One will be able to abide in pure morality.
  • It increases one's scriptural understanding and realization.
  • One will have perfect inner and outer conditions to practice Dharma.
  • One will not be overwhelmed by untimely death and will have a long life.
  • The community of sangha will be increased.
  • The study and practice of the Tripitaka (Three Baskets) will increase.

From the Sixteen Arhats Puja text:

Supreme arhats, holders of the Dharma handed down to all beings by the Lion of the Shakya clan, who open the treasure chest of doctrine that is in your care: I entreat you to abide forever. I invite you to propagate the sacred Dharma. Please come and enjoy the displayed offerings for the benefit of transmigrators. You who received Buddha’s word, holders of the banner of doctrine: Angaja, Ajita, Vanavasin, Kalika, Vajriputra, Bhadra, Kanakavatsa, Kanaka-Bharadvaja, Bakula, Rahula, Chudapanthaka, Bharadvaja, Panthaka, Nagasena, Gopaka, Abheda, and your retinues: please come and enjoy the displayed offerings for the benefit of transmigrators. Although you attained buddhahood through splendid abandonment and splendid exalted wisdom, you show the appearance of Hearers. In this special role of virtue, you sixteen sthaviras preserve the Dharma. I request you to descend and be seated on these cushions.

Sixteen sthaviras, holders of the Doctrine including the verbal transmission of the Sugata, you entered the jungle of samsara, abandoned personal welfare, and worked for the welfare of others. Through your compassion, please promise to come to this place. By saying truly “Please may I take refuge in you?” Upasaka Dharmatala, you became the servant of the Triple Gem. I invite you within the precious field of merit. Please come and enjoy the displayed offerings for the benefit of transmigrators.
