This recording can be taken as an oral transmission.
This album by Lama Zopa Rinpoche features the oral transmission (*lung) of the Sutra of Great Liberation in Tibetan.

The Sutra of Great Liberation is an important Mahayana sutra that is often recited and greatly cherished in Tibet. The sutra contains teachings on various topics, as well as the names of many enlightened beings. This text is often recited for those who have passed away.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche cites the extensive benefits of this sutra in the teachings on Thought Transformation during the Time of COVID-19 and Practice Advice from the book Opening the Door to the Excellent Collection of Benefits and Qualities Arranged in Sections. By keeping, hearing, reciting, writing or explaining this sutra to others has great benefits, even just having a copy of it is auspicious.

Some of the benefits are as follows:

  • [Compared to] totally filling all the great-thousand-fold of a three-thousand-fold worlds with jewels and giving them [to the buddhas], by hearing just the name of this sutra you get unimaginable merits.
  • If you hear just one time the buddhas and the bodhisattva's holy names mentioned in Great Liberation Sutra, for great eons you won’t be reborn in the hell realm.
  • Even if you save the lives of the transmigratory beings in the three-thousand-fold universes and make charity to them, but if you explain to others the mere meaning of one verse of this sutra, the merits are greater.
  • Even if you fill the numberless three-thousand-fold universes with jewels and offer them; but if you write the letters or recite or keep the Sutra of Great Liberation, the merits are greater.
  • By merely reciting this sutra, these unceasing negative karmas—such as degenerating your vows, committing the five heavy negative karmas without break, and criticizing the holy Dharma—are purified and you achieve nirvana.
  • The person who writes or recites Sutra of Great Liberation, and the people and animals around them, will be guarded and protected by the devas of the white side, such as Brahma and Indra.
  • Anyone who holds this sutra will be completely free from all suffering, will never fall into the lower realms, and will go to a happy place.
  • Anyone who keeps this sutra will achieve full enlightenment.

Other benefits:

  • You will achieve great psychic powers and will be able to turn the wheel of Dharma. You will be liberated from the continuum of samsara and you will also be able to defeat the host of maras
  • Even if a buddha is not abiding in the world, wherever this sutra is in the world and offerings are made to it, a buddha will actually be there.
