The first prayer that we usually recite before a practice is the refuge and bodhicitta prayer. Refuge and bodhicitta are the motivations that we generate at the beginning of each teaching. Refuge is the door to the Buddhist path and bodhicitta is the door to the Mahayana path. Refuge protects one from following a wrong path, while bodhicitta protects one from falling into a lesser path.
